In April 2020, 27-year-old Nicolas Chavez was shot and killed by Houston police officers while on his knees and unarmed. Body camera footage contradicted initial reports that Chavez had attempted to grab a stun gun. Four officers were fired for their involvement but were later reinstated. The incident sparked public outcry and calls for police reform.
