In August 2024, Officer Benjamin Harris was involved in the violent arrest of Tyron McAlpin, a deaf Black man with cerebral palsy. Body camera footage showed Harris tasering and punching McAlpin during the arrest. McAlpin faced charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest, which were later dropped. Harris was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident. This case drew widespread condemnation from civil rights organizations and added to ongoing scrutiny of the Phoenix Police Department for alleged discrimination and excessive force.
