In January 2016, Officer Brandon Atkins was terminated after admitting to lying about the reason he was not riding his motorcycle while on duty. He falsely claimed it was due to heat, but later admitted it was because of stomach problems. Atkins filed a lawsuit alleging retaliatory workplace discrimination, claiming his termination was due to his filing of a workers’ compensation claim. The court granted summary judgment in favor of the Town of Wake Forest. ([law.justia.com](https://law.justia.com/cases/north-carolina/court-of-appeals/2019/18-1167.html?utm_source=openai))
