Officer Brett Gailey filed a civil lawsuit in June 2019, alleging that the department discriminated against him due to his military status with the U.S. National Guard, which required him to miss workdays. He claimed that he was wrongfully and repeatedly passed over for promotions, despite being first on the list for sergeant. The city denied the allegations but agreed to settle the lawsuit for $549,000 in May 2020, without admitting any wrongdoing. Gailey’s last day with the department was May 1, 2020.
