In January 2014, Officer Casey Gillette shot and killed Rocendo Arias, a 23-year-old man, who was asleep in his car at a car wash. Gillette claimed Arias lunged at him with an airsoft gun, but the family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging the shooting was unjustified. The Yakima County Prosecutor’s Office found the shooting justified, but the lawsuit sought damages and changes in police use-of-force policies.
