In December 2020, Officer James Weston filed a lawsuit alleging that he was subjected to retaliation by Sheriff Richard Berdnik for endorsing political rivals in the 2010 election. Weston claimed he was demoted from the detective’s bureau to the probation office, resulting in a pay cut, and was forbidden from training with the county SWAT team and teaching firearms classes. Berdnik and the county dismissed the allegations as false and frivolous.
