In 2008, Officer John Bass was named in a lawsuit alleging excessive force during the arrest of a motel owner who had complained about loud music. The plaintiff claimed that Bass, along with other officers, used unnecessary force during the arrest. The court found that the officers lacked arguable probable cause for the arrest and denied them qualified immunity on the excessive force claim.
