In June 2013, Police Chief John Crane was suspended for 15 days by the Gadsden Civil Service Board for ministering to an inmate, Justin Denson, who was a family friend. Crane visited Denson monthly in jail, provided him with a suit for court, and deposited money into his commissary account. The board found that Crane’s actions violated its rules and may have negatively impacted the reputation of the Gadsden Police Department.
