In September 2020, Officer John McClanahan was involved in an incident where he allegedly falsified an accident report to retaliate against Brandon Williams, who had previously exposed McClanahan’s perjury. After Williams was seriously injured in a car accident, McClanahan and other officers allegedly misrepresented facts on the accident report to minimize the incident and deflect blame from the at-fault driver. The Fourth Circuit Appeals Court later stripped immunity from the officers involved, allowing Williams’ claims of First Amendment retaliation and intentional infliction of emotional distress to proceed.
