On July 20, 2019, Officer Gorny was driving approximately 90 mph while responding to a reckless driver call. He ran a red light and collided with Erica Flores’ vehicle, resulting in her death. Gorny intermittently used his lights and siren prior to the crash. A grand jury declined to indict him in August 2019. However, in September 2019, Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski recommended his termination, citing violations and conduct unbecoming of an officer. The Board of Public Safety fired Gorny in November 2019 after a two-day disciplinary hearing. The Flores family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Gorny and the city, alleging negligence and improper training.
