On January 14, 2017, Officer Adams arrested Wayne Dallas North for suspected shoplifting. During the arrest, North ran but eventually surrendered by lying face down. Adams allegedly turned off his body camera and proceeded to punch North multiple times in the face while wearing tactical gloves with reinforced knuckle protection, resulting in severe facial fractures and other injuries. North filed a civil rights lawsuit against Adams and the South Jordan Police Department, alleging excessive use of force and failure to properly train officers. The department’s use-of-force review board cleared Adams, determining his actions were within policy.
