He allegedly planted drugs to secure their convictions, leading to their wrongful imprisonment on federal drug charges. In 1999, a jury found Officer Newton liable for fabricating evidence, malicious prosecution, and false imprisonment, resulting in a $2,300,000 judgment against him and the City of Andalusia. The court determined that his actions were within the scope of his employment as a law enforcement officer.
