In 2022, former Officer de la Cruz filed a lawsuit against the Groton Town Police Department alleging discrimination and retaliation. After sustaining a chronic injury in 2018 that ended his fieldwork, de la Cruz claimed the department failed to rehire him for an office position and did not act on complaints related to his race and ethnicity. He also alleged the department denied his disability retirement applications, despite accommodating other officers in similar situations.
