In June 2018, Officer Bernot used a Taser on Sean Williams, an unarmed man sitting on a curb, during a response to a disturbance. Williams alleged he was confused by conflicting commands from officers. The incident was captured on video and led to public outcry. Williams filed a lawsuit against Bernot and the city, claiming excessive force and racial profiling. The lawsuit was pending as of 2020. Bernot was not suspended or fired, as his actions were deemed compliant with existing use-of-force policies at the time.
