In 1986, Officer Walter C. Ethridge was suspended and later terminated for refusing to take a polygraph examination during an internal investigation into alleged misconduct. Ethridge disobeyed direct orders from Police Chief Howard Buttrey to take the exam, leading to his suspension. After failing to appeal properly and refusing to return to work, Ethridge was terminated on January 2, 1987. He filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of his suspension and termination, but the court upheld the city’s actions.
