On April 22, 2023, Officer Zachary Young and three other officers were involved in the arrest of Shawn Sims. Sims was taken to the ground and, while fully detained and not resisting, was punched multiple times in the head, shoulder, and back. A Taser was also used on him twice. Sims suffered facial fractures, a broken nose, fractured jaw, broken orbital sockets, and complete loss of vision in one eye. A lawsuit filed on May 8, 2023, alleges that the beating was a severe abuse of police power and violated Sims’ constitutional rights. The Ogden Police Department declined to comment on the lawsuit.
