Master Police Officer P.W. Coates was involved in the fatal shooting of Reuel Rodriguez-Nunez in 2022. Rodriguez-Nunez, experiencing a mental health crisis, was setting cars on fire and throwing lit gasoline cups toward officers. Coates confronted him, leading to Rodriguez-Nunez throwing a lit cup in the officers’ direction, after which police opened fire. The Wake County District Attorney ruled the use of force justified, and no criminal charges were filed.
