On May 11, 2023, Officer Paige Mitchell, then president of the Elyria Police Patrolmen’s Association, unlawfully entered Raul Ortiz’s home without a warrant, encouraged his ex-girlfriend to forcibly enter, and subsequently used a Taser on Ortiz despite his heart condition. Ortiz was arrested on multiple felony charges, all of which were later dismissed. An internal investigation found Mitchell violated 10 departmental policies, including ‘violation of rules,’ ‘field interview and pat-down searches,’ ‘unsatisfactory performance,’ ‘conformance to laws,’ ‘arrest search and seizures,’ and ‘truthfulness.’ Initially recommended for termination, she received a 30-day unpaid suspension.
