On November 11, 2023, Corporal Paul Garcia was involved in a high-speed crash while responding to a robbery call, traveling at speeds up to 131 mph. He collided with a vehicle driven by Isabella Hernandez, resulting in the death of her 14-month-old son, Wyatt Franzoy, and causing severe injuries to Hernandez. Garcia was charged with vehicular homicide and great bodily injury by reckless driving. In November 2024, Luna County approved a $7 million settlement with the Franzoy family. Garcia had a prior history of reckless behavior, including a 2016 guilty plea for aggravated DWI and previous charges of child abuse and careless driving, which were dropped.
