In April 2015, Officer Mando Kenneth Gomez fatally shot 22-year-old Erik Salas Sanchez multiple times inside his mother’s home. Salas Sanchez was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. The family filed a lawsuit alleging excessive force and inadequate training by the El Paso Police Department. In March 2022, the City of El Paso settled the case for $1.2 million.
