The deputy, feeling unable to drive home, was invited to stay overnight. She reported that Garcia assaulted her while she was unconscious. Another deputy intervened, and the incident was reported. Garcia was arrested in January 2023 on suspicion of sexual assault and was subsequently fired later that month. The victim filed a $900,000 claim against Garcia, Pima County, and other officials, alleging inadequate response and a culture of avoiding proper channels within the department. The Arizona Attorney General’s office found policy violations but no criminal wrongdoing by the department’s command staff during the investigation.
