In 2017, Officer Richard Cheatwood was terminated from the Vestavia Hills Police Department for conduct unbecoming a police officer, insubordination, and making a terrorist threat. The termination was based on allegations that he threatened to bring an AK-47 to a City Council meeting. Cheatwood denied making the threat and filed a lawsuit against the City, claiming age discrimination and retaliation. The district court granted summary judgment in favor of the City, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the decision in 2022.
