    In 2008, Sheriff Richard Turcotte was removed from office pending a hearing to address multiple charges filed by the state Attorney General. Allegations included failing to comply with corrections regulations leading to jail closures, allowing unlicensed individuals to serve as deputies, neglecting to enforce court-ordered arrests, and mismanagement of department property and records. The state sought his removal for misconduct, malfeasance, neglect of duty, or gross incompetence.
