In April 2015, Reserve Deputy Robert Bates fatally shot Eric Harris during an undercover sting operation, claiming he mistook his handgun for a Taser. Bates was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and sentenced to four years in prison. The incident led to a $6 million settlement with Harris’ estate and exposed issues of inadequate training and favoritism within the Sheriff’s Office.
