Former Deputy Sheriff Robert Laborde was implicated in the wrongful conviction of Michael Simmons in 1977. Laborde executed an arrest warrant without probable cause, assaulted and shot Simmons post-arrest to coerce a confession, participated in an unconstitutional lineup, and helped suppress exculpatory evidence. These actions contributed to Simmons spending over 44 years in prison for crimes he did not commit. In 2022, Simmons’s convictions were vacated, and he was released.
