In December 2021, Officer Ryan Manning was arrested and charged with child abuse after his infant daughter was found with multiple bone fractures. Manning was terminated from the department on December 27, 2021. In June 2023, he was acquitted of all charges. Following his acquittal, Manning filed a lawsuit against the Scottsboro Police Department and the city, alleging that his former colleagues conspired to provide false statements during his trial, leading to his wrongful prosecution and termination.
