Former Sheriff Sam Cochran was named in a 2021 lawsuit alleging that under his leadership, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office failed to address severe and pervasive sexual harassment of female corrections officers by male inmates at the Mobile Metro Jail. The lawsuit claimed that despite numerous reports, Cochran did not take prompt and effective action to remedy the harassment. In 2023, a $2 million settlement was reached, requiring the sheriff’s office to compensate the affected women and implement changes to reduce sexual harassment in the jail. Cochran retired in January 2023 and did not seek reelection.
