    In 2015, former deputy Scott Jackson was terminated shortly after running a political campaign against then-incumbent Sheriff Rick Besecker. Jackson filed a lawsuit alleging his termination violated his constitutional right to free speech. In 2018, the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office settled the lawsuit, agreeing to pay Jackson $415,000 in two installments.
