    In August 2017, Deputy Selena Nelson was terminated following an internal investigation into a citizen’s complaint alleging misconduct during an off-duty incident at a Bluffton store. The investigation concluded that Nelson was untruthful during the inquiry, leading to her dismissal. Nelson filed a federal lawsuit in November 2018, claiming racial and sexual orientation discrimination in her firing. The case was settled in December 2021, with the settlement amount undisclosed.
