On November 5, 2016, Sergeant Gaddy was involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Elswick during an attempted arrest. Officers were responding to a report that Elswick had fired a gun into a neighbor’s trailer. After a prolonged standoff, officers attempted to enter Elswick’s home, during which Sergeant Gaddy fired his weapon, resulting in Elswick’s death. A lawsuit alleged excessive force, but the court granted summary judgment in favor of the officers, finding their actions objectively reasonable under the circumstances.

Important Community Guidelines

Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
