In 2019, Sergeant Jeff Thurman was accused of making racist and sexist remarks, including allegedly stating, ‘You ready to kill some [N-word] tonight or what?’ during a phone call in 2016. An internal investigation also found that Thurman sexually harassed a female deputy during an out-of-town training. As a result, Thurman was terminated from the Sheriff’s Office. He later filed a defamation lawsuit against the department, and in December 2022, a jury awarded him $19.5 million, concluding that he had been wrongly fired and defamed.
