In April 2022, Sgt. Sives was involved in the fatal shooting of John Fauver, a 53-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis. Deputies responded to reports of a suicidal individual believed to be armed. During the standoff, Fauver reached for what was later identified as a cane. Sgt. Sives and another deputy fired their weapons, resulting in Fauver’s death. The incident led to a $1 million settlement paid by Harford County to avoid a lawsuit, though the county did not admit wrongdoing. The shooting raised concerns about the sheriff’s office’s handling of mental health crises and prompted legal action from the Maryland Attorney General against Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler for alleged interference with the investigation.
