On October 5, 2020, Sgt. David Ackman conducted a traffic stop on Juan Adrian Garcia for driving without headlights. During the stop, Garcia exited his vehicle and approached Ackman with one hand behind his back. Despite being unarmed, Garcia was shot six times by Ackman. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Ackman and Napa County, alleging excessive and unjustified force. Ackman retired from the department in 2021.
