In February 2023, Sgt. James Williams was involved in an incident where he repeatedly slammed detainee Travis Craig’s head into a metal shelf and then onto the floor of the county jail. This occurred after Craig, who was handcuffed, spat blood and saliva into Williams’ face, claiming he had hepatitis C. The use of force resulted in Craig suffering an orbital fracture and concussion. The incident was reviewed and found to be within the county’s use of force policies, and the District Attorney’s office declined to prosecute Williams. Craig has since filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging excessive force.
