In July 2020, Sgt. Janak Amin was fired and arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at a suspect’s head during an arrest and threatening to shoot if the suspect didn’t provide his name. The State Attorney’s Office later declined to prosecute, citing insufficient evidence of a crime. In December 2022, the suspect, Carl Elkins, filed a lawsuit against Amin alleging assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The Sheriff’s Office had previously settled with Elkins for $15,000.
