In 2018, Sgt. Jason Speakman was investigated for exchanging sexually explicit text messages, including a video of himself masturbating in his office, with dispatcher Melissa Kunz. The internal affairs investigation recommended termination for violating the department’s harassment policy. However, Sheriff Tom Ferrara demoted Speakman for six months, concluding the texts were consensual. Kunz was later terminated while on medical leave after reporting the behavior. In 2021, a jury found that Speakman did not sexually harass Kunz, despite the internal affairs findings.
