On October 27, 2024, Sgt. Joseph Gibson, 28, was involved in an incident where he slammed 71-year-old Lich Vu to the ground during an argument over a traffic ticket. The altercation resulted in severe injuries to Vu, including a broken neck and brain bleed. Gibson was charged with felony aggravated assault and battery. However, in January 2025, Oklahoma’s Attorney General dismissed the charge, stating that Gibson’s actions adhered to his training and did not exhibit criminal intent. The incident sparked outrage within Oklahoma City’s Vietnamese community due to communication difficulties observed in the body-worn camera footage.
