In June 2022, Sgt. Robert Smith of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office was suspended with pay after being charged by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office in connection with an off-duty incident in Mechanicsville, MD. On July 25, 2022, Sgt. Smith pled guilty to one count of driving while impaired in St. Mary’s County District Court. Following the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office’s Office of Professional Responsibility conducted an administrative investigation into the matter.
