Sheriff Shawn ‘Mickey’ Stines was arrested in September 2024 for the murder of District Judge Kevin Mullins. The incident occurred after an argument in the judge’s chambers, where Stines allegedly shot Mullins multiple times. Stines surrendered without incident and was charged with first-degree murder. Prior to the shooting, Stines was deposed in a federal lawsuit accusing him of failing to investigate allegations that his deputy, Ben Fields, repeatedly sexually abused a woman in the judge’s chambers.
