In June 2023, former deputy Shawn Ray Carnes, 44, was charged with first-degree voyeurism. He allegedly violated a victim’s privacy by taking a picture through a hole while she was using the bathroom at the Downtown Fitness Compound. The incident occurred while he was off duty. Following the allegations, Carnes was terminated from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, and the case was investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
