In May 2007, Deputy Sheriff Shawn Stoddard was involved in the involuntary commitment of Deborah S. Meyer to a psychiatric facility. Meyer alleged that Stoddard and other officers provided false information to justify her detention, claiming she had been violent when evidence suggested otherwise. The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals found that a jury could infer that the officers knowingly provided false information to have Meyer committed, potentially violating her Fourth Amendment rights. The case was remanded for further proceedings.
