In 2009, Sheriff Charles ‘Charlie’ W. Morris was federally indicted for conspiracy to commit theft, money laundering, and wire fraud. He created fictitious bonuses for employees, who were then directed to return the funds under the pretense of charitable donations. Morris was found guilty, sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison, and fined $212,000. He also received 20 years of probation for state charges.
