In July 2018, Sheriff Charles Jenkins was involved in a lawsuit alleging racial profiling. Deputies under his command detained Sara Medrano, a Latina resident, during a traffic stop, questioning her immigration status without proper cause. The incident led to a settlement in January 2021, where Jenkins issued a written apology and the county paid $125,000, including $25,000 to Medrano and $100,000 in attorneys’ fees. The lawsuit highlighted concerns over discriminatory policing practices within the department.
