In 2023, Sheriff Chris Kaber was investigated by the Oregon Government Ethics Commission for potentially violating state law by supervising his son, Sergeant Ryan Kaber, within the department. Despite an agreement to prevent direct supervision of family members, Sheriff Kaber reassigned his son to a supervisory role in the detective division without opening the position to other applicants. This led to the county commissioners revoking the agreement, requiring the sheriff and his sons to decide who would remain in the department. In May 2024, the ethics commission dismissed the complaint, noting that Sheriff Kaber had addressed the issue upon being made aware of it.
