In 1992, Sheriff Dallas Cormier was charged with thirty-six felonies, including improper use of inmate labor and using public funds for personal purchases such as trucks, boots, and guns. An audit revealed misappropriation or missing funds totaling $250,000. Cormier pleaded guilty to one count of felony obstruction of justice, resulting in a three-year probation and a $10,000 fine. Additionally, he was investigated for mistreatment of detainees in the parish jail.
