In August 2020, Sheriff Darryl Daniels was charged with a third-degree felony for evidence tampering and three first-degree misdemeanors for knowingly giving false information to law enforcement. The charges stemmed from an investigation into allegations that he compelled subordinates to carry out a false arrest of a woman with whom he was having an affair. Following these charges, Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Daniels from his position as Sheriff.
