In 2011, Sheriff Fred D. McKee terminated Detention Officer Michael Williams for insubordination after Williams refused to comply with McKee’s directive to park his personal vehicle, which displayed a politically charged bumper sticker, away from the front of the Delta County Detention Facility. Williams filed a lawsuit alleging violations of his First and Fourteenth Amendment rights. The court dismissed Williams’s claims, concluding that Sheriff McKee’s interest in maintaining the appearance of impartiality and ensuring workplace efficiency outweighed Williams’s interest in displaying the bumper sticker.
