In 2011, Sheriff Lewis Evangelidis terminated Jude Cristo, an employee who objected to paying staff for engaging in campaign activities during work hours. Cristo filed a lawsuit alleging retaliation under the Whistleblower Act. In 2018, a jury awarded Cristo $885,000 in damages, finding that the Sheriff’s Office retaliated against him for his objections. The court declined to award treble damages, determining that the conduct did not suggest an underlying evil purpose.
