In January 2018, Sheriff Parker shot James McFarlin, an unarmed man, in the head while McFarlin was driving a stolen front-end loader in circles in an empty field. The incident led to a $3.75 million settlement in March 2022, with allegations of excessive use of force. Sheriff Parker and the county denied liability, maintaining that the sheriff acted reasonably under the circumstances.
