In 1999, the United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the Sheriff of Hampshire County, alleging sex discrimination for failing to hire Ernestine Friera as a jailer because of her gender. The case resulted in a settlement agreement, with the Sheriff offering Ms. Friera $35,000 in resolution of the matter.
